Comprehension Passages and Composition Writing (Primary 5 and 6)

 

Learning Objectives

  • To guide and introduce students into the academic realm of reading comprehension and composition writing in an engaging yet relaxed manner.
  • To strengthen students’ reading and composition writing capabilities by equipping them with various reading and writing techniques.
  • To add colour and simplify the mostly commonly feared areas of composition writing and reading comprehension.
  • To ensure students are fully prepared to excel for their PSLE.

Programme Outline

Topic/Picture-based Composition

  • Introduce exam format and procedure
  • Two common problems students faced when writing compositions are a perceived lack of capability and insufficient vocabulary. This proramme will introduce students to simple writing techniques that will enable them to write compelling yet imaginative pieces.
  • How to write an introduction and conclusion
    -  Utilise the 'Link 6 Essentials' method
    -  Use constructive words and sentences

Reading Comprehension 

Analyse passages, writing styles and pinpoint answers from within

  • Narrative Style: Pinpoint the 6 key essentials of the passage
  • Conclusive Style: Summarise the main idea and conclusion of the passage by making an informed assessment of the topic and  methods o expression employed
  • Insightful Style: Grasp the outline of the passage, analyse the main points made, understand the writer's argument and intention

Methods to enhance students' analytical prowess

  • The 'Seeking Out' method
  • The 'Spot the Links' method
  • The 'Compare & Contrast' method
  • The 'Explorative' method

Use questions to highlight the main ideas

  • Sum up the passage
  • Grasp key concepts and points while reading
